The History Forum: A Year in Review
Since its launch in September 2023, the History Forum has brought history to life through a rich programme of online talks delivered by expert speakers. As we prepare to begin our third year, it’s a wonderful moment to reflect on what we’ve achieved together.
Series 9 and 10 offered an extraordinary range of topics, taking us from the shadowy world of the Italian Mafia to the daring lives of female pirates and spies. We explored the origins of the Salvation Army and uncovered some of the more curious beliefs held by ancient societies.
Our journey also led us inside remarkable historic sites, including the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, Sir John Soane’s House in London, and Cumberland Lodge in Windsor Great Park. Along the way, we discovered how Italian cuisine rose to global popularity, how London’s ‘Little Italy’ helped bring ice cream to the masses, and why pilgrimage was such an important part of medieval life.
We examined the world in the immediate aftermath of the Second World War, learned about courageous students who stood up to Hitler, and even explored how Spain has transformed historic castles into unique places to stay. And, how the Italian Renaissance ended in 1527.
My sincere thanks go to all our guest speakers, whose knowledge and enthusiasm made Series 9 and 10 so engaging and memorable: Peter Zablocki, Dr Jim Harris, Dr Roger White, Dr Phil Davies, Loona Hazarika, Dr Alice Hunt, Dr Ross King, Mike Tickner, Paul Chrystal, Emeritus Professor David T. Gies, Bill Appleton, Dr Diego Zancani and Dr Alexandra Lloyd.

The History Forum looks forward to welcoming you back in September 2026 as we embark on another fascinating journey into the secrets of the past.
Until then, have a wonderful and relaxing summer!
